In this context, important updates have been introduced in the Complementary Technical Instructions (ITC) of the Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation (REBT) that directly affect surge protection (PCS). The main new features are detailed below: <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Protection against direct lightning strikes (Type 1):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mandatory in installations located in areas with high incidence of electrical storms or directly connected to overhead lines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Type 1 PCSs are designed to withstand extremely high discharge currents and protect the installation from the point of entry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Network overvoltage protection (Type 2):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mandatory for all new installations and renovations of existing installations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This type of PCS protects connected equipment against surges generated in the electrical system, such as voltage spikes caused by internal operations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Extension of the scope of application:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Single-family homes, residential buildings and small businesses should also include PCS in their electrical installation designs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Specific regulations for renovations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Any significant refurbishment of existing
